Villages to Visit

Hilltop villages, markets and old stones

Around La Motte, the Var hinterland is full of characterful villages: cool lanes, shady squares, fountains and Provençal markets. Here are the ones we love to show our guests.

Market on Tuesday mornings

Lorgues

A large Provençal town with shady lanes, famous for its Tuesday morning market. Don’t miss the Saint-Martin collegiate church, one of the largest churches in the Var.

Highest village in the Var

Bargème

Perched over 1,000 metres high, this old feudal village is dominated by its Romanesque church and the ruins of its castle. The view is breathtaking.

Pays de Fayence

Tourrettes, Mons and Callian

  • Tourrettes: an open-air museum village with a fine view from the clock tower.
  • Mons: a trail of 35 wrought-iron signs telling the story of old trades.
  • Callian: an imposing feudal castle surrounded by winding lanes.

The water trail

Ampus

You reach it via the Col de la Grange and its spectacular view. The “chemin de l’eau” (water trail) leads from wash houses to fountains, past a mill and old aqueducts.

Black truffle capital

Aups

A centre of Provençal gastronomy: black truffles, olive oil, wine, saffron and goat’s cheese. The Maison de la Truffe et du Verdon is housed in the former Saint-Jacques hospice.
